St. John Bosco football handles pressure to beat Servite at SoFi Stadium

INGLEWOOD – With the spotlight on St. John Bosco’s football team due to a quarterback transfer and the SoFi Stadium environment on Friday night, the Braves overcame early pressure and found a needed groove against Servite.

Freshman quarterback Koa Malau’ulu threw for three touchdowns, including two on the first two drives of the second half, for the Braves to pull away from the Friars, 27-17, in a Trinity League game.

St. John Bosco (8-0, 3-0) now sets up for a top-two showdown against No. 1 Mater Dei next Friday, Oct. 25. Servite (6-2, 1-2) plays Orange Lutheran on the road.

Malau’ulu completed 16 of 24 passes for 205 yards in his second start for Bosco. Madden Williams caught six passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Daniel Odom caught six passes for 78 yards.

Servite also started a freshman at quarterback in Allen “Cinco” Kennett V, despite Michigan State commit Leo Hannan warming up in full gear. Hannan is recovering from a leg injury. Kennett completed 6 of 9 passes for 56 yards and two interceptions. Quaid Carr carried the ball 19 times for 159 yards and two scores.

It was an inauspicious start for Servite’s freshman quarterback, as Bosco intercepted his pass on the very first play of the game, but a Bosco penalty kept Servite alive.

On Bosco’s first drive, Servite forced three straight incompletions, including a fourth-down stop at the Friars’ 20-yard line.

Servite got its first spark on the first play of the ensuing drive, as Carr found a lane on the right side for a 60-yard burst to the opposing 20-yard line. Carr finished the drive on a 6-yard touchdown run for the Servite lead, 7-0.

It only took five plays for Bosco to respond, as Malau’ulu found Carson Clark deep up the seam on a 32-yard touchdown pass to tie the game, 7-7.

Bosco grabbed an official interception on Servite’s next drive, as Isala Wily-Ava came up with the pick in Friar territory. The Braves set up at the Servite 5-yard line, and on the first play of the second quarter, Ashton Keyes took the 2-yard plunge into the endzone to put Bosco ahead.

The Braves missed the extra point and led 13-7.

Servite kept mostly to the ground on the ensuing drive with a couple rollout passes to move down the field. Owen Erdman knocked through a 30-yard field goal to cut the deficit to three points, 13-10.

Servite forced a Bosco three-and-out with no yards gained to get the ball back for a scoring opportunity before halftime.

However, the Braves snagged their second interception of the half on a deep shot to the 3-yard line to deny Servite points. Jacob Holmes wrestled away the pick for Bosco.

Bosco scored on its first two drives of the second half to take control of the game.

Malau’ulu got going with five completions on the first drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Madden Williams for a 10-point lead, 20-10.

After Bosco forced a three-and-out, a short punt got the Braves started at Servite’s 35-yard line. Five plays later, Malau’ulu found Williams again at the back of the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown pass for a three-score lead, 27-10.

Servite got a jump with a kickoff return to the Bosco 45-yard line and a 20-yard run by Carr. A horsecollar tackle put Servite at the 2-yard line, and on the first play of the fourth quarter, Carr bounced off the pile and in for the 1-yard score.

Servite hit Malau’ulu as he wound up to throw to force a fumble, and Brando MosQueda recovered for the Friars and returned the ball to midfield.

Servite’s chance to cut the game to a one-score game stalled and a long field goal went left.
