Retail theft duo in Southern California caught with nearly $1,500 in stolen goods

A man and a woman were taken into custody after cameras at a Southern California retail clothing store captured the duo stealing nearly $1,500 in merchandise and making a run for it, officials announced Tuesday.

Officers with the Upland Police Department responded to the area of Euclid Avenue and Foothill Boulevard on the evening of Oct. 14 on reports of the theft in progress.

In a post to X, formerly Twitter, police said it was the third reported theft within a matter of hours at the unspecified retailer.

Security footage of the suspects shows them entering the store and then quickly leaving through an emergency exit, both with shopping carts overflowing with stolen merchandise.

Authorities said the pair loaded their Toyota Camry and, as they were attempting to flee the area, crashed into a raised planter in the parking lot but then continued onto Euclid Avenue where they were spotted by officers.

When police attempted a traffic stop, the female suspect behind the wheel did not initially comply, but ultimately pulled over.

“As officers contacted the female driver (who is on probation for theft) and male passenger, the anti-theft devices in the back seat were still ringing,” the social media post read.

Footage of the stop released by police shows the backseat of the Camry practically stuffed with stolen clothing, shoes handbags and other merchandise, as well as bolt cutters and a crowbar, which are often considered burglary tools.

“All in all, the two stole $1,404 in merchandise and were booked for felony grand theft, conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and [had] their vehicle towed,” police said.
