Long Beach cancels Boil Water Notice after water main break

The City of Long Beach lifted all restrictions after a Boil Water Notice on Wednesday and Thursday affected thousands of residents.

The boil order was issued due to a large water main break at 3502 Orange Avenue, officials said. It applied to residents and businesses in the 90805, 90807 and a small portion of the 90806 zip codes.

“As a resident of the North Long Beach community, and a father of two very busy school aged children, I fully understand that the boiling water notice may have caused an inconvenience for families, vulnerable residents, and businesses,” Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. “Please know that we issued the advisory in an abundance of caution as a preventative measure in the interest of keeping our families safe. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to public health.”

Long Beach Utilities Issued, and later rescinded a Boil Water Notice to customers in zip codes 90805, 90807 and portion of 90806.

The notice was given because water pressure was lowered significantly enough to make water unsafe to consume without boiling, the city said. On Thursday and Friday, 117 water analyses were conducted in affected areas, concluding that drinking was safe.

According to the city, Long Beach Utilities conducts about 60,000 water quality tests yearly.
