‘Common-sense safety measures’ being implemented in SF’s West Portal neighborhood, says Mayor Breed

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Mayor London Breed, alongside with the SFMTA (San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency) and city officials, announced new safety upgrades on Friday as part of the West Portal Station Safety and Community Space Improvements Project.

The project started in April 2024 in response to a car collision on March 16 that killed a family of four, as they waited at a bus stop on Ulloa Street and Lenox Way near the West Portal Muni station. Diego Cardoso de Oliveira and Matilde Ramos Pinto, their 2-year-old son Joaquin and infant Caue Ramos Pinto de Oliveira were identified as the victims.

“It took less than six months from launching this project to getting safety improvements built, and we have West Portal community members to thank for that,” said District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar.

Following the project’s approval by the SFMTA Board in July, the following traffic safety measures were implemented:

Traffic calming treatments have been added to Ulloa, Vicente, and Wawona streets.

Vehicle restrictions and transit lanes have been introduced.

Lenox Way has been converted to one-way southbound traffic.

Speed cushions and speed tables (wider versions of speed humps) have been installed on Wawona Street between Taraval Street and 14th Avenue to deter speeding.

Vehicle restrictions currently in effect on West Portal Avenue include:

No left turns from northbound West Portal Avenue onto Ulloa Street.

No westbound through traffic on Ulloa Street at West Portal Avenue.

No left turns from southbound West Portal Avenue onto Vicente Street.

Additional improvements outlined in the plan, expected to be completed by fall, aim to:

Calm traffic in the West Portal neighborhood, encouraging drivers to slow down in areas with high pedestrian activity.

Simplify the intersection of West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street to reduce through-traffic and clarify the right of way in this busy pedestrian area.

Redesign the SFMTA West Portal station “horseshoe” to enhance the station entrance, create more space for pedestrians, and guide riders more effectively.

Support a vibrant commercial corridor in West Portal, ensuring easy access for customers traveling by all modes of transportation.

“West Portal is a vibrant neighborhood that is home to some of San Francisco’s most beloved and unique shops and restaurants and serves as a transit hub for so many people coming to and from our Downtown and neighborhoods across the City,” Mayor London Breed said. “I want to thank Supervisor Melgar and the SFMTA for working with community to implement these common-sense safety measures to create a safer environment for this neighborhood.”
