LASD deputy pleads no contest to 2018 DUI hit-and-run

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy pleaded no contest this week to charges related to a 2018 DUI that injured another person.

Orlando Sotomayor Flores pleaded no contest on Oct. 8 to a felony charge of reckless driving involving alcohol causing injury and a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced.

The March 29, 2018, crash on the 10 Freeway in Covina occurred while the off-duty Sotomayor Flores was “driving at a high rate of speed” and “collided with the rear end of another vehicle, causing it to flip over and roll several times before hitting another car,” prosecutors said.

A passenger in one of those vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The deputy turned himself in to law enforcement on March 30, 2018, about four hours after the crash.

“Law enforcement is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting our communities and upholding the law, on- and off-duty. I want to express my empathy for the victims who suffered at the hands of Mr. Sotomayor Flores’ reckless actions,” said Gascón.

Sotomayor Flores is expected to be sentenced to two years of felony probation. He also will have to pay $5,000 in restitution to the victims, complete a three-month DUI class, relinquish his law enforcement certification and sign a statement indicating he understands the risk driving drunk poses to others.

That sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2025.
