Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for heavier restrictions on smartphones in schools, pointing to studies that show the harmful effects of social media. How do you see schools restricting smartphone use? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

The use of cell phones in classrooms remains a contentious issue. On one hand, some argue that these devices serve as distractions, detracting from students’ focus and academic performance. On the other hand, there are concerns about safety and the need for students to have access to phones for emergency situations.

In my view, the presence of cell phones in classrooms generally has a detrimental effect on students’ attention spans. Constant notifications and the temptation to use social media or other non-educational apps can divert students’ focus away from their lessons. This distraction impedes their ability to engage fully with the material and can ultimately hinder their academic potential.

While it is important to address safety concerns, I believe that finding a balance where cell phones are either restricted or managed effectively within educational settings is crucial. Ensuring that students are not unduly distracted will help them to stay more focused and maximize their learning opportunities, leading to better educational outcomes.

How can your district better harness artificial intelligence technology for learning while also protecting kids from another tool that can be used for bullying? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

AI has the potential to revolutionize learning and research in education, offering unprecedented opportunities for students and educators. However, as with many technological advancements, its use can be both beneficial and problematic.

When it comes to bullying, AI’s role is complex. While AI can provide valuable resources and support in addressing bullying, it is not a cure-all. Bullying occurs on multiple levels — physical, verbal, and emotional — and cannot be eradicated simply by restricting AI tools.

To effectively combat bullying, a holistic approach is essential. This includes not only preventing the misuse of AI but also fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment. Comprehensive strategies should involve education about respectful behavior, clear anti-bullying policies, and active involvement from teachers, parents, and students.

Addressing the root causes of bullying and implementing robust support systems are key to creating a safer and more supportive educational environment. AI can play a role, but it should be part of a broader strategy that includes education, prevention, and intervention to truly make a difference.

What are the top two needs of your school district, and how are you prepared to address them? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

First-generation Latino students, particularly those who are non-English speakers, are often at risk of falling behind in their education. To address this, we need to create targeted learning programs that support these students and help them overcome their disadvantages. By providing tailored assistance, we can better equip them for success and pave the way for prosperous careers.

Equally important is ensuring the safety of our school campuses. Students should be able to focus on their education without the fear of bullying or gang-related threats. Schools must be sanctuaries where safety is a priority, and where every student feels secure and supported.

Combining specialized educational programs with a commitment to campus safety will create an environment where first-generation Latino students and all students can thrive. This dual focus will help bridge educational gaps and provide a safe, nurturing space for all learners.

What experiences and priorities do you bring to the table for this role? What have you learned in prior leadership roles that make you the person for this job? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

As a former mayor and regional leader, I possess the experience and skills necessary to guide the Saddleback Valley USD effectively. During my tenure as mayor, I collaborated closely with the school district superintendent to enhance campus security and secure additional funding. This support was crucial in expanding continuation schools, ensuring that every student graduates with a diploma rather than just a certificate.

My hands-on experience in working with educational leaders and securing resources positions me well to contribute positively to the district. I am committed to fostering a safe learning environment and supporting initiatives that help every student achieve their full potential.

California has a new law, set to go into effect in 2025, that prohibits districts from enforcing what’s been called parental notification policies, rules for school employees to contact parents if their child may be changing their gender identity. What do you see as the role of parents in education? Is there a limitation? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

Parents play a pivotal role in a child’s life, encompassing responsibilities such as raising, feeding, mentoring, guiding, and ensuring a quality education. Their involvement is fundamental to a child’s development and well-being. It is crucial that parental rights remain intact, as parents are not only responsible for their children but also have an obligation to stay informed about their child’s experiences and needs.

Parents’ rights to oversee their child’s education and personal growth are essential for fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. This involvement helps ensure that children receive the guidance and resources they need to thrive. Respecting and preserving parental rights is vital to supporting family dynamics and empowering parents to fulfill their role effectively.

What role do you see your district playing in combating climate change? (Please limit your answer to 200 words or less.)

Climate change is a critical issue that demands the involvement of every organization to drive positive change. Our school district has a unique opportunity to contribute by adopting more sustainable practices. Implementing renewable energy sources, such as solar power, can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Transitioning to electric vehicles for school transportation and incorporating recycled water systems can further enhance our environmental efforts.

Additionally, reducing our reliance on paper books by embracing digital resources and investing in more efficient heating and cooling systems will help cut down greenhouse gas emissions. These measures not only support the fight against climate change but also set a valuable example for students and the community about the importance of sustainability. By taking these steps, our school district can make a meaningful impact on the environment while fostering a culture of eco-consciousness.
