OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Residents and volunteers in East Oakland met up Friday morning along a busy corridor plagued by blight to take matters into their own hands. Neighbors said it’s been a struggle to keep families and businesses in the area.
Stephanie Allen has called East Oakland home for more than 40 years. She lives a few blocks away from MacArthur Boulevard and Myers Street where she believes illegal dumping and a nearby encampment are tarnishing her community.
“I do a lot of complaining, but I want to be part of the solution too,” said Allen.
The gathering marks District 7 Councilmember Treva Reid’s third Community Safety Task Force Day of Action and Community clean-up event in the neighborhood since June.
“We’re seeing, we’re responding and we’re meeting our community where they are with the resources and the services and the support that they deserve,” Councilmember Reid commented.
While volunteers, city crews and community ambassadors cleaned up, grassroots groups set-up tables to encourage residents to vote and offer other services, which Stephanie Allen hopes people take advantage of. “I want it to be a place where people want to come and buy homes and raise their families,” Allen said.
Councilmember Reid told KRON4 News that one more day of action is being scheduled for October.
