Police arrested two people on drug charges after a plane made an emergency landing on a Southern California highway in the early hours of Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.
According to the Oceanside Police Department, the emergency landing was reported at about 1:43 a.m. Officers received reports that a plane made an unexpected landing near Canyon Drive on Highway 76, which runs east-to-west through San Diego’s North County region.
No injuries were reported after the aircraft, which wasn’t described, landed on the roadway. The pilot told authorities that the aircraft’s engine was failing.
Both of the occupants were later contacted by police after further investigations. Authorities performed a search of the plane, which yielded a “large quantity of narcotics.”
Police didn’t say which specific narcotics were found, however both individuals were arrested on suspicion of illegal transportation of narcotics.
Both suspects are Oceanside residents.
No additional details were immediately made available, although police said more information will be released as the investigations continue.
