OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — It’s a sad week for Oakland Athletics fans as the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum closes and the team makes a move to Sacramento before potentially Las Vegas for good.
It’s an even more stressful week for hundreds of Coliseum workers trying to figure out what’s next, as many are left with no job or benefits.
Vice President Yulisa Elenes of Unite Here Local 2, a union that represents hundreds of Coliseum workers, told KRON4 that all of them will be left with nothing after Thursday’s game. No severance pay is being offered, and Aramark, the Oakland A’s’ food service contractor, said they will not pay for the health care coverage that workers have already qualified for under eligibility rules, according to the union.
“A majority of the workers are African American, and many are Oakland natives,” said Elenes. “Uprooting these quality jobs from East Oakland will leave a lasting scar. The least Aramark could do is pay out workers’ health insurance, as promised, and pay a fair severance to keep workers afloat as they find new jobs.”
Many have worked at the Coliseum for 20 to 30 years, the union said, serving food and beverages and assisting fans through the stadium.
KRON4 reached out to the Oakland A’s and Aramark but has not heard back.
