(KRON) — A Massachusetts man was sentenced to five years in prison for a scam in which he targeted Target using the store’s gift cards, the United States Department of Justice said.
Michael O’Brien, Jr., 32, stole at least $508,000 from Target. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud.
His scheme involved buying Target gift cards and selling their codes online. He would then return the gift cards for a full refund, the DOJ said.
O’Brien’s scheme affected locations in 36 states, including California. He used more than 1,000 gift cards.
O’Brien said he intended to steal more than $1 million using the scheme. In addition to the prison time, he will have to pay Target $508,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
