Mission Viejo plans to award contract for $6.2 million Los Osos shopping project by end of year

The Los Osos Core Area project is on track for construction to begin as early as this winter, Mission Viejo officials said.

The City Council is in the bidding process to get contractors to work on the construction. Councilmembers plan to award a contract in December, said Assistant City Manager Jerry Hill, and then construction could begin later that winter or spring of 2025.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful project,” Hill said.

The Los Osos project — a plan to bring a new shopping and entertainment area — began in 2021. Located at the Village Center off of Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road, the 22,736 square-foot project takes over the older shopping center and connects to the greater project on Oso Creek.

The first phase of the project — which officials said should be completed by 2026 — includes amenities, such as an ADA-accessible plaza, gathering spaces, restrooms, lighting, landscaping and a space for a weekly market.

This will all be done in the North Veseo area of the Village Center. It is estimated that this part of the project will cost the city $6.2 million.

According to the city, the project is “intended to span a decade or more before the entire vision is realized.” Last year, city officials held tours for community members to scope out the area and provide feedback.

“It’s a really exciting project,” said Mayor Trish Kelley. “Mission Viejo is a really family-oriented city that fits really nicely with being able to offer more family and community-centered events.”

Those interested in participating in the bidding will need to complete and submit a bid contract found on Mission Viejo’s website.

The City Council said it plans to discuss the Los Osos project again in December.
