A teenager has been arrested and charged with a slew of crimes after he allegedly tried to murder two men on a beach in Santa Barbara County.
A joint release issued by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the Goleta Police Department states that the 15-year-old was arrested after a shooting that occurred at 12:51 a.m. Sunday at Haskell’s Beach in the city of Goleta.
Deputies were quickly dispatched to the beach and found two men in their 20s suffering from gunshot wounds, authorities said. They also learned that the suspect flashed gang signs at the victims before shooting them.
One of the victims was shot in the hip, while the other was shot in both legs. Each is expected to survive, and it is not believed that the victims and suspect were known to one another.
Deputies were able to locate the suspect, who fled the area on foot, at 2:19 a.m., less than two hours after the shooting.
He dropped a handgun as he was fleeing, law enforcement officials said, adding that deputies recovered the gun and found it was registered to an owner from out of the area but not reported stolen.
The teen was booked at the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a concealed firearm, gang enhancement and enhancement for using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The suspect was not identified due to his age, and since he is a juvenile, he is not eligible for bail. The case will be forwarded to Juvenile Probation for adjudication.
