Ocean Avenue’s Sushi Laguna, helmed by chef-owner Jay Sada since 2001, will close its doors at the end of the month.
A sign posted to the Laguna Beach restaurant’s door reads, “Dear loyal customers, we are sorry to announce that Sushi Laguna will be closing due to the owner’s retirement in the new few weeks. Thank you so much for supporting us for 24 years!”
Sada, a Japanese native, opened the restaurant on St. Patrick’s Day in 2001, serving sushi staples like nigiri and rolls, as well as other dishes like ramen, udon, tempuras, a handful of fried rice options, katsu don, yakitori, mussels and more.

In a 2003 review for the Los Angeles Times, S.J. Cahn wrote a glowing review of the coastal town’s sushi spot, giving a shoutout to the restaurant’s house-made wasabi, noting, “The wasabi at Sushi Laguna makes your eyes water wonderfully. It’s fresh, green and hot. And it’s just the tip of what makes this Ocean Avenue eatery a good stop, especially for a lunchtime bite to eat.”
