Veteran Air is perhaps as well-known for its charitable work as it is for serving Orange County’s air conditioning and heating needs. From Thanksgiving ham giveaways to holiday toy drives, the spirit of giving back is embedded in the company.
Jessica Anderson, owner of Veteran Air, explains how she and her late husband Mike, who founded the company 15 years ago and died last year, struggled in their years as a young family with small children.
“Sometimes, we would have $20 to our name and that’s what we would go grocery shopping at the dollar store with,” she says. “We really struggled as a family and worked very hard to get where we are today.”
After Mike Anderson’s passing, Jessica says that it was important to keep the Thanksgiving ham giveaway going. “It’s a big family thing for us because we were once collecting food from food banks,” she says, adding that their children get involved in the project and help hand out 100 hams every year. “My husband has passed, but it’s part of his legacy. It’s part of Veteran Air. It’s always going to be a part of who we are.”
When it comes to the HVAC business, Jessica notes that treating customers “like they’re family” is something Veteran Air has always taken seriously because they also know what it’s like to not have air conditioning on a gruesomely hot summer day.
As Jessica takes over the day-to-day operations for Veteran Air, she wants customers to know that the company will continue in much the same fashion. “My goal is to make sure that Veteran Air continues the same,” she says, “and how people saw it with him, they’re going to continue to see with me.”

2. Alps Heating & Air Conditioning

Family is crucial at Alps Heating and Air Conditioning.
“My father-in-law, Al (Puig), learned the trade from his father-in-law years ago,” says assistant general manager Joey Gibellino, who has been with Alps for at least 15 years and works alongside his brother-in-law.
Family is something that the business stresses in its relationship with customers. “All my guys know that if you go into a house, I want you to listen to the concerns of people, see what the problems are and make recommendations like you would if it was your grandmother or your mom or your sister or your brother,” he says. That means that Alps works with technicians who will look to see what can be fixed before suggesting that you get a new system.
Gibellino notes that it’s ideal to contact Alps in the spring to have your air conditioning checked out and serviced, if necessary, before the summer heat waves hit. For those who need a new AC system, he points out that prices will be rising nationwide next year and notes that Alps is an EnergyStar company, so it can offer Go Green financing.
