Thundercat to play free SF show next month

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Bass guitar-slinging funk rocker Thundercat is set to headline a free show in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park next month. The Grammy-winning musician will be joined by neo soul-singer Lee Fields for a performance at Robin Williams Meadow on Sunday, Oct. 20.

The show was organized by Noise Pop Industries and Civic Joy Fund as a finale for their citywide “Summer of Music” musical program. The day-long party at the meadow will also feature Bay Area psychedelic cumbia group, Combo Tezeta.

Over the course of the summer, the Summer of Music program provided over 570 free concerts and partnered with more than 85 small businesses, providing paid gigs to more than 1,300 musicians. The concert series has featured more than 200 musicians from the Bay Area performing in “intimate storefront mini-concerts,” according to Noise Pop.

Musical genres in the series have run the gambit from rock to jazz and folk. The day-long Meadow Party will also feature pop-up performances from other Summer of Music musicians around the Meadow.

“I’m so excited for this event and so proud of the entire Summer of Music series. It’s exactly what the Civic Joy Fund is all about – celebrating what makes San Francisco great, together,” said Manny Yekutiel, Executive Director of Civic Joy Fund and co-founder of Summer of Music.

Summer of Music was launched last year to help businesses recover post-pandemic by encouraging patrons to spend their money locally.

The Summer of Music Finale on Oct. 20 gets underway at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m. at Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Admission is free and the event is open to all ages. RSVP is highly encouraged.
