Cruise to resume testing on Bay Area streets

(KRON) — Nearly a year after a Cruise driverless vehicle was involved in an accident in which a pedestrian was dragged, the autonomous vehicle company announced it would be resuming testing on Bay Area streets. In a post on X Thursday, Cruise said it had already begun deploying human-driven mapping vehicles in Sunnyvale and Mountain View.

The General Motors-backed company said the intent was to progress to supervised testing with up to five driverless vehicles later this fall.

“Resuming testing in the Bay Area is an important step forward as we continue to work closely with California regulators and local stakeholders,” Cruise said. This will allow our local employees to engage directly with our product as they refine and improve our tech through R&D.”

In October of 2023, a Cruise driverless vehicle ran into a pedestrian who had already been struck by another vehicle driven by a human. The Cruise robotaxi, which was named “Panini,” dragged the pedestrian about 20 feet before coming to a stop.

That incident came several months after Cruise recalled 300 robotaxis following a crash with a Muni bus.

Following the October incident, the company announced it would be pausing Bay Area operations.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
