Linebacker Abduall Sanders, defensive tackle Tomu Topui and defensive back Aaryn Washington scored defensive touchdowns as Mater Dei’s football team rolled past Kahuku 38-7 in a nonleague game Saturday night in Hawaii.
Washington, a sophomore, provided an early spark by returning a fumble forced by Danny Lang II about 5 yards for a score in the first half.
Sanders, a senior who is committed to Alabama, opened the second half by returning an interception about 25 yards for a touchdown and 24-0 lead.
Topui later intercepted a screen pass and returned the ball 50 yards for a score. The junior has three touchdowns in the past five games.
The Monarchs’ defensive also received contributions from Nasir Wyatt, Shaun Scott and freshman Ace Leutele, who collected his second interception.
Quarterback Dash Beierly, who is committed to Washington, added touchdown passes to Koen Parnell and Gavin Honore to help Mater Dei improve to 3-0.
The Monarchs, ranked No. 1 in the nation by multiple polls, delivered the strong performance one week after a 31-15 victory against No. 2 Bishop Gorman of Nevada.
Last season, Kahuku notably upset visiting St. John Bosco 30-23.
Mater Dei returns to action on Friday, Sept. 20 against St. Frances Academy (2-2) of Maryland at Santa Ana Stadium.
