SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – The San Francisco Police Department is considering changing some of its police district boundaries in an effort to “maximize resources and better deliver policing services to the community,” SFPD Chief Bill Scott announced on Thursday.
These changes, Scott said, aim to improve “workload balance,” increase resources to “high need areas,” and enhance an officer’s ability to respond to emergency calls more quickly.
“The SFPD is doing everything within its power to deliver the highest quality service to everyone in our city,” Scott said. “By making some adjustments to our station boundaries, our officers will be more efficient and effective as they continue to do a tremendous job policing San Francisco.”
SFPD is proposing 15 changes to eight district boundaries. Some of the key changes, according to police, include:
Moving Tenderloin and Southern stations back to Market Street
Moving the Castro neighborhood from Mission Station to Park Station
Making Van Ness Avenue the boundary between Northern, Central, and Tenderloin stations
The rest of the changes are included in the list above. Police said there will be no changes to the Ingleside or Taraval stations.
Roberto Hernandez, from the Mission Merchants Association’s Board of Directors, told KRON4 he believes the Mission District does not have enough policing.
“I know for our neighborhood, crime has definitely gone up… Part of the problem is the resources of the police department being deployed, and they’re not being deployed to our neighborhood,” Hernandez said.
San Francisco police are required to review district station boundaries every 10 years and make adjustments “when appropriate.” According to the PD, important factors include:
Population data
Calls for service and arrests
Community input
Decline in SFPD staffing numbers
Changes to resident and non-resident populations
Impacts of criminal behavior
The last time the SFPD conducted a boundary analysis was in 2015. In September and October, the SFPD will hold community meetings to discuss the changes.
After public input, SFPD will submit the recommendation to the police commission for approval. Community members can get more info on the project here.
