SANTA ANA — A twice-convicted drunken driver was charged with murder Tuesday for a fatal collision in Costa Mesa.
Jose Santos Alejandretorres was charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and DUI with a blood-alcohol level of .08% or more causing injury, all felonies. He also faces sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.
The defendant was accused of having a blood-alcohol content of .15, more than twice the legal limit, according to the criminal complaint. He is accused of killing Lucila Robledo on Friday, the complaint alleges.
The defendant was twice before convicted of drunk driving, which allows prosecutors to elevate charges from manslaughter to murder, upping the punishment for a set time in prison to a life sentence.
Further details about the fatal crash were not immediately available from police or prosecutors.
