HUNTINGTON BEACH — Much has been written about the Huntington Beach football team’s high-powered offense this season and for good reason.
Sophomore quarterback Brady Edmunds has averaged close to 300 yards passing per game with nine touchdowns.
Edmunds had another exceptional performance in the Oilers’ 29-24 nonleague victory over Capistrano Valley on Friday at Huntington Beach High School.
Edmunds completed 23 of 35 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns.
But defense factored in the victory for the Oilers (2-1) as much as the offense.
“Our goal is just to continue to fight and not give up,” Oilers coach Brett Brown said. “These guys played their butts off and it was awesome to see.”
The Cougars (2-1) received the opening kickoff and drove 86 yards, capping the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Acosta to Talon Spencer.
Huntington Beach missed a field goal on the ensuing drive and the Cougars took over and were driving inside Oilers’ territory again.
But instead of the Cougars extending the lead, Steel Kurtz picked off a first-down pass and returned it or a 59-yard touchdown.
“I got one Week Zero against Orange and this was the exact same play call as the last one,” Kurtz. said. “We’ve been watching film the whole week. We kind of knew what they were going to do in a certain formation. I kind of knew he could run a hitch. And I just jumped over it.”

Even though it was early, the interception changed the tone of the game right away.
On the Cougars next drive, a high snap on a first-and-10 play from their 10 sailed into the endzone for a safety, giving the Oilers.
Huntington Beach maintained the lead the rest of the way but it was battle that came down to the final drive, mostly because Acosta also turned in an excellent performance, completed 17 of 27 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns.
Late in the first half, Oilers held the Cougars to a three-and-out and took over on their 31 with two-minutes remaining in the half.
Edmunds led a 69-yard scoring drive, completing five passes for 52 yards and running for 14 yards.
Sammartano then capped the drive with 3-yard touchdown run to complete a 13-point second and a 19-10 lead at the half.
With under two minutes remaining in the game and no timeouts, the Cougars trailed by 5 and had one more chance.
The Cougars drove down to the Oilers 40 with just over a minute remaining.
Acosta targeted receiver Kaden Hunter on four consecutive plays but Hunter was well covered each time and all four passes were incomplete.
Defensive back Charlie Stubin made a fine play to break up the fourth down pass.
‘I knew he was going to probably throw to him,” Stubin said. “But I kind of saw it late because I didn’t think he was going to run a corner. I’m sideways so it’s hard to see him. But I saw it eventually and I just made a play on the ball.”
