Child abuse suspect at large after Southern California boy found with injuries

A suspect accused of physically abusing a child in San Bernardino County remains at large.

On Sept. 3, San Bernardino County deputies responded to an elementary school in Loma Linda where staff had reported possible child abuse.

The young boy in question had a visible burn mark on his neck and a contusion on his forehead.

Authorities learned the boy’s guardian, April Brooks, 36, had a boyfriend named Kristen “Kris” Michaels who allegedly caused the boy’s injuries when he kicked the child in the head.

Deputies said Brooks was reportedly aware of the abuse but allowed Michaels to remain at home with the boy.

Additional abuse to other children in the household was also reported.

Brooks was arrested on charges of child endangerment. Investigators said she was “uncooperative in identifying Michaels and refused to provide information that would assist deputies in contacting him.”

Michaels remains at large. He is described as a tall, Black man with long black hair, tattoos on his face and a facial piercing below his eye.

Anyone who knows Michaels’ whereabouts or has information on the case is asked to call SBSD Detective K. Garabedian at 909-387-3545.
