A 4-year-old girl in California’s Central Valley was fatally attacked by her family dog Wednesday night, according to police.
The Visalia Police Department said officers responded to a home on the 2300 block of West Monte Vista Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. following a report of the attack by the family’s pit bull.
The girl had just finished swimming and was inside the home when the dog attacked, according to police. Despite receiving immediate medical attention and being transported to the hospital, she died from her injuries.
Her name was not immediately released.
Detectives investigating the case found no evidence of neglect or criminal wrongdoing by the girl’s family.
“This heart-wrenching event is a tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this incredibly difficult time,” police said.
California has regulations regarding dangerous dogs, but the state does not have a comprehensive statewide ban on pit bulls. Local jurisdictions may impose their own restrictions, and some cities bar the ownership of pit bulls that are not neutered or spayed.
