Known for her operatic soprano voice and for seamlessly flowing through various genres like pop, rock, jazz and bossa nova, multi-Grammy winning singer Natalia Lafourcade is teaming up with Gustavo Dudamel and the L.A. Phil for a two night show at the Hollywood Bowl.
“I’m so excited and emotional about this show,” said the Mexican singer.
The Sept. 6-7 shows, which are meant to honor culture and memories, will include songs by contemporary composers such as John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine,” Arturo Márquez’s “Danzón No. 9,” Gabriela Ortiz’ “Antrópolis,” which is based on Mexico City’s nightlife, as well as “Tonada de Luna Llena” by Venezuelan folk singer/composer Simón Díaz.
“For me that classical influence becomes very strong when I get the chance to play a live show with an orchestra. We were working very hard to see how every instrument will be telling a story with me. I feel like it’s a very huge musical landscape behind me,” she said.
Lafourcade will also perform songs from her approximately 20-year career, including her latest Grammy-winning album, the 2022 release “De Todas las Flores,” which she has described as her “musical diary.” The album interweaves several different genres like Latin folk, son jarocho, bossa nova, cumbia, bolero and jazz as well as classical.
“We’re going to hear a set list that I’ve been preparing for a long time,” she said. “It’s a bunch of songs that have to do with my path in music,” she added.
The blending of musical genres is something that comes naturally to Lafourcade, who grew up in a musical family; her father is the Chilean musician and music teacher Gastón Lafourcade and her mother, María del Carmen Silva Contreras, is a pianist and music teacher. So Lafourcade remembers her home as basically being a music school.
“I was living in a house that was full of rooms and each room was a music classroom. For me everyday life was watching my parents teaching music and listening to the music they were listening to and that included a lot of Bach, Chopin,” she said.
That background led her to become one of the most acclaimed female artists of all time.
She has won 17 Latin Grammys, more than any other female performer, and four Grammy Awards. The singer/songwriter has collaborated with some of Latin music’s biggest acts, including Juan Gabriel and Los Ángeles Azules. She also worked with singer Miguel to record “Remember Me,” which was featured on Disney’s 2017 animated film “Coco.” And her NPR “Tiny Desk Concert” which now has 30 million views.
“I think I’m just open to good music. I just try to find music that has a lot of souls and spirit,” Lafourcade said. “I feel so very happy for the recognition of my work and I’m really grateful for that,” she said.
