Mission Viejo has hired former Mater Dei football coach Frank McManus as a defensive assistant coach, Diablos coach Chad Johnson confirmed Thursday.

McManus returns to Orange County high school football about four months after being dismissed by Mater Dei in April after one season at the helm. The Trinity League school didn’t cite a reason for McManus’ removal.

Last season under McManus, the Monarchs captured CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF State Open Division championships en route to a 13-1 record. They were named national champions by High School Football America for a fourth time.

McManus replaced veteran Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson before the 2023 season. McManus was hired after a long run as an defensive backs coach with the Monarchs.

Earlier this offseason, Golden West College stated that McManus would coach defensive backs for the Rustlers this fall. McManus is listed on the team’s website as an assistant coach and will serve in that role, Johnson said.

McManus could encounter a familiar former foe on Saturday. The Diablos (1-0), ranked third in Orange County, are set to host No. 4 Santa Margarita of the Trinity League.

Johnson said McManus also is working at Mission Viejo as part of a teaching prep program.

Mission Viejo’s offseason coaching additions include former NFL quarterback Rob Johnson (El Toro) as an assistant.
