A festival-style gathering on Sunday in Huntington Beach featured a doggie-dog twist, with skateboarding pups showcasing their talents at the World K9 Sk8 Competition.

Skateboarding dogs hit the ramps and pavement at McKenna Volkswagen, where spectators showed up to watch the dogs shred, enjoy music and food vendors.

The event was advertised as the “world’s first X-Games style skateboarding competition exclusively for K-9s.”

Ryan Lynch and his skateboarding bulldog, Henny, founded the event with a goal of bringing together a community of “skilled K-9 skaters and their enthusiastic followers.”

The dogs did a relay race to send a video into the Guinness World Records, each dog having to go 10 meters, the first such attempt for dogs, said Anthony Bitmayl, CFO for the event.

If the video is deemed worthy, the next gathering will be the official Guinness World Record attempt.

In addition to the skateboarding dogs, there were humans showcasing their skills on bikes and skateboards, as well as beginner skate dogs learning the basics.

“This is something that is unique, it’s one of a kind, no one has ever done it before,” Bitmayl said. “Everyone loves K-9s and everyone loves dogs on skateboards. We’re combining the festival-style event where the highlight is the skating dogs.”

The long-term goal of the event is to create a dog sanctuary, a place pups can roam more freely than in shelters, Bitmayl said.
