Pitney Bowes laying off 236 people as it closes e-commerce hub in Bloomington

Pitney Bowes is laying off 236 people in Bloomington, effective Oct. 8, as it shuts down its e-commerce logistics business amid bankruptcy.

The shipping company is liquidating the business, which lost $136 million last year, after cutting deals with Hilco Global and bondholder Oaktree Capital Management.

Pitney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last Thursday, listing debts and assets of as much as $500 million each, according to Bloomberg.

The company in a letter to the state Employment Development Department said employees at the facility at 11260 Cedar Ave. were given 60-days notice Aug. 9.

“None of the employees whose employment will be terminated have a right to claim another job at the Company based on seniority (so-called “bumping rights”). The Company expects that these layoffs will be permanent in nature,” Pitney Bowes said in its letter to EDD.

Most of the jobs include package handlers, forklift operators and other e-commerce type roles.

In addition to similar closures around the U.S., Pitney Bowes also is laying off 112 people at a similar logistics facility that will shutter in Stockton.
