The CIF Southern Section girls volleyball season begins Saturday.
Some of Orange County’s top teams participated last week in a two-day club tournament that was perhaps a season preview. Santa Margarita won the Elite Varsity Division of The Queens of the Court tournament that concluded Sunday at Momentous Sports Center in Irvine. The Eagles beat San Juan Hills in the final and defeated Trinity League rival Mater Dei in the semifinals.
Orange County has four defending CIF-SS champions: Mater Dei (Division 1), JSerra (Division 2), Beckman (Division 3) and Capistrano Valley Christian (Division 4). Orange Lutheran (Division 2) and El Dorado (Division 4) reached the finals last year.
Mater Dei won the CIF State Open Division championship.
Sophomore outside hitter Westley Matavao, who was All-Orange County first team last season, has transferred from Orange Lutheran to Mater Dei.
The CIF-SS playoffs begin Oct. 23 and the championship games are Nov. 8-9.
The CIF Southern California Regional playoffs are Nov. 12-19 and the CIF State finals are Nov. 22 and 23.
Venues for the CIF-SS and CIF State finals will be announced later.
