Surfers — experienced and novice — arrived in Manhattan Beach on Saturday, Aug. 3, hoping to catch waves during the 61st International Surf Festival.
On the north side of the Manhattan Beach Pier, competitors just needed swim fins, the only equipment allowed for the bodysurfing heats.
But over on the south side of the pier, surfers brought boards to particpate in the South Bay Boardriders Club Summer Surf Off — one of the original ISF contests.
The ISF, originating in 1962, highlights the best water and sand sports in the South Bay, with regular folk participating, as well as international lifeguard teams.
Besides surf competitions, the five-day festival also features pier-to-pier swimming and paddleboarding, beach volleyball and lifeguard relays.
Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the weekend:
The lifeguard championship events: 7:30 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier.
The Velzy-Stevens Pier-to-Pier Paddleboard Championship: 7:30 a.m., from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier.
Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim: 9 a.m., from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The Junior 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament: 9 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
