HOUSTON — The Dodgers are sending James Paxton back from whence he came.
After designating him for assignment earlier this week, the Dodgers have worked out a trade with Boston that will send the veteran left-hander to the Red Sox in exchange for minor-league infielder Moises Bolivar.
Paxton, 35, signed a free-agent deal with the Red Sox following the 2021 season but did not pitch for them until the 2023 season due to injuries. He signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers as a free agent this past offseason.
Bolivar, 17, signed as an international free agent with the Red Sox in January. The 6-foot, 175-pound Venezuelan was playing for the Sox’s Dominican Summer League team, batting .270 with three home runs, 19 RBIs and a .787 OPS in 31 games this year. He has played first and third base. Bolivar did not rank in the Red Sox’s Top 30 prospects.
Paxton was 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts for the Dodgers this season but was plagued by high walk totals (a National League-leading 48 in 89 1/3 innings) and a 1.46 WHIP that limited his ability to get deep in games.
With Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow returning this week – and Walker Buehler and Bobby Miller also expected back soon – the Dodgers designated Paxton for assignment Monday in order to clear a roster and rotation spot.
