Another Big Lots in Orange County is winding down sales before closing for good.
This time, it’s the Rancho Santa Margarita store, according to the company’s website and emails sent to customers.
The discount store at 30501 Avenida de las Flores didn’t announce a specific closing date, but clearance sales have begun. Merchandise is marked 20% off, which typically means it could be weeks before the doors close.
Store fixtures are also for sale.
Big Lots, which said on July 10 that it might have to consider bankruptcy, is among several big chains that are paring down stores as shoppers curb their spending habits. Several stores in Orange County have shuttered, with one already replaced in Orange by Goodwill Orange County.
The Columbus, Ohio-based company runs at least 1,300 stores in 48 states, but has not publicly disclosed which stores are closing.
Other retailers that closed stores in recent months include 99 Cents Only and RiteAid.

Blow dry salon opens in Los Alamitos
The “no cuts, no color” Blo Blow Dry Bar has opened in Los Alamitos.
The salon specializes in hairstyling and makeup, opening July 19 in the Towne Square shopping center at 4370 Katella Ave.
The franchise is owned and operated by husband and wife Brandon and Leanne Anderson.
For anyone who’s unfamiliar with the concept, customers who don’t need a cut or hair coloring can opt for “dry bar” service, which styles hair (think fancy events, weddings and the like).
Blo offers customers five hairstyles, plus à la carte options, depending on your budget. Customers can opt for hair treatments and makeup, too. Prices range from $59 for a basic blowout up to $105 for more customized styles. A blowout with extensions costs about $75. Makeup services start as low as $5 for a lip touch-up or $100 for a full face of makeup plus lashes.

IKEA bringing small-format store to Laguna Hills
IKEA is expanding its order and pickup services to four Southern California cities later this year.
Rather than open large warehouse stores, the Scandanavian flat-pack retailer is crafting smaller hubs for either planning IKEA installations (think kitchens or bathrooms) or picking up online orders.
The company said Friday that new “plan” and “order pickup” locations are coming this fall to Santa Monica, Thousand Oaks, Laguna Hills and Ontario.
Thousand Oaks and Ontario are getting IKEA’s Plan and Order Points with Pick-up. That’s a lot of words that basically mean customers can plan, order, and pick up purchases made at IKEA design studios, in its stores or online. The locations in Santa Monica and Laguna Hills will be aimed at customers who need to simply pick up purchases made at IKEA.
$50,000 for Heavenly Home
The Foster Family Foundation has given $50,000 to the Southern California Hospice Foundation.
The money will go to the nonprofit’s Heavenly Home, which opened in February 2023 and provides 24-hour care and housing to residents facing terminal illness.
Hospice services including housing, caregiving, bereavement care and fulfilling final wishes for residents.

Diana Lu Evans and Avi Garbow recently were appointed to the board of directors at Crystal Cove Conservancy. The Conservancy to protecting Crystal Cove State Park. Evans is a business strategy and operations leader at Capital Group. Garbow is president of Resources Legacy Fund, where he designs, directs, and implements environmental initiatives.

Rossmoor resident David “Dave” Sorem recently was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to the Underground Facilities Safe Excavation Board. He’s been President at Mike Bubalo Construction since 2000 and was a project engineer and manager at the same firm from 1992 to 1999. This board position does not require Senate confirmation; there is no compensation. Sorem is a Republican.

Top Workplaces nomination deadline extended
The nomination period for the 17th annual Top Workplaces program has been extended to Aug. 16.
So far, about 250 companies in Orange County have signed up to participate in the free program.
Later this summer, workplaces will be evaluated by their employees using a short, 24-question survey. There is no obligation to buy any product or service.
Nominees will be surveyed through September.
Any organization with 35 or more employees in Orange County is eligible to participate. They can be public, private, nonprofit, or government.
