5 hospitalized after food truck explodes in Whittier

Five people were hospitalized, two of them in critical condition, after a food truck exploded in Whittier on Saturday morning, July 20, authorities said.

Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the 6700 block of Greenleaf Avenue just past 9:15 a.m. on a report of an explosion, said Robert Diaz, a dispatch supervisor.

The food truck was believed to be sitting in front of a coffee business, Diaz said.

In addition to the two people with critical wounds, two others had moderate injuries and another had minor ones, Diaz said.

What caused the explosion was not known. Additional information was not immediately available.
