Election 2024: Candidates can now file for local elections

The candidate filing period for the Nov. 5 election is now open.

Anyone eligible who’s interested in running for office must file candidacy documents at the Orange County Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m. on Aug. 9. However, if the incumbent fails to file by that time, the deadline will be extended to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 for interested candidates excluding the incumbent, the registrar said.

Contests on the November ballot include about 80 city seats and other nonpartisan offices, including county supervisor, school district trustees and water district directors. Offices of the president, U.S. Senate, Congress, state Senate and state Assembly are also up for election.

To be eligible to run for office, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen and registered voter. For local seats, a candidate must be registered to vote in the district or area they’re running to represent.

Those interested in running in a city contest must file candidacy papers at the respective city clerk’s office, the registrar said.

For the rest of the contests, candidacy documents will be available online at ocvote.gov/candidates beginning July 15. Anyone interested in running can get a head start by downloading many of the required documents using the candidate filing portal, according to the registrar.

Documents will also be available at the registrar’s office, 1300 S. Grand Ave., Building C, Santa Ana, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Individuals could also schedule appointments at the registrar’s office to file their candidacy papers via ocvote.gov/appointments. Appointments will be available in the morning and evening, the registrar said.
