Santa Margarita’s football team has suffered a major injury.
Wide receiver Jonah Smith, a junior transfer from Mater Dei, broke a tibia bone on June 19, he confirmed on Monday.
Smith said he isn’t sure of the timetable for his return.
In March, Smith (6-0, 175) committed to UCLA to highlight a strong offseason.
He was projected to start this season in a strong wide receiver corp with junior Trent Mosley and senior Sean Embree Jr. (Washington State commit).
As a sophomore last season, Smith had 27 catches for 363 yards and eight touchdowns to help Mater Dei win CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF State Open Division championships.
Santa Margarita faced another setback at wide receiver before last season with the loss of Emmett Mosley, now at Stanford.
