HUNTINGTON BEACH — A 35-year-old man was behind bars Monday on suspicion of killing a woman last month in Huntington Beach, police said.
Christopher Mendez of Diamond Bar was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Friday at the border with Mexico as he attempted to re-enter the U.S., said Jessica Cuchilla, a spokeswoman for the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Mendez, who was being held on $2 million bail, is accused of killing 35-year-old Nicole Marquisee of Walnut on May 31, Cuchilla said.
Police were dispatched about 2:30 p.m. that day to a residence on the 1100 block of England Street for a suspicious death.
Police earlier reported Mendez was in a dating relationship with the victim.
Marquisee, also known as “Coco,” was a registered nurse and dedicated her life to helping others, her sister Erilen Marquisee wrote on FreeFunder, a fundraising website. Family members on the website said Marquisee was “taken from us way too soon as a victim of domestic violence.”
Marquisee also was described as always being “the life of the party and made everyone feel loved wherever she went.”
Police would not release any further details.
