Eric Borba has resigned as Orange Lutheran baseball coach, a position Borba held for 16 seasons.
The school made the announcement today (June 6).
He led the Lancers to the CIF Southern California Regional Division I championship this season. They beat La Mirada 7-6 in the Division I final on Saturday.
Assistant coach RJ Farrell will replace Borba. Farrell, who has recently been listed as co-head coach, has been on the Orange Lutheran baseball coaching staff for the past five seasons.
Borba, 49, built Orange Lutheran into one of the top high school baseball programs in the nation. The Lancers have won three National High School Invitational championships. Orange Lutheran has appeared in a national top 25 in each of the past 10 years.
“My family and I have decided this is the right time for me to step down,” Borba said. “My kids have both recently graduated from OLu and are attending schools out of state. I’m excited about the opportunity to watch Casey play college baseball (at Texas) and visit Mackenna at Auburn.”
Among the players Borba coached at Orange Lutheran are New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole, last year’s American League Cy Young Award winner, and Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Garrett Mitchell. They are among 13 Borba-coached Orange Lutheran players who have been selected in the MLB Draft.
This season Orange Lutheran went 28-7 overall. The Lancers won the Trinity League championship with an 11-4 league record, the sixth Trinity League title during Borba’s tenure. Orange Lutheran advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals.
Borba got his 500th career coaching win this season.
