Mission Viejo softball coach Clint Watson, who guided the Diablos to a CIF-SS title in 2022, has resigned after seven seasons, he said.
“It was a really good run,” Watson said. “I have no regrets. I got to meet some great people and I got to coach some great athletes.”
Watson said one of the main reasons he resigned was to devote more time to Watson Wolfpack Fastpitch, his travel softball organization. He started the team in September after previously aligning with the Lady Dukes organization.
“It was time for me to really focus on the business,” Watson said.
Mission Viejo finished 19-7-1 this season and ranked No. 15 in Orange County. The Diablos lost at Whittier Christian 3-2 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.
In 2023, Mission Viejo fell to Los Alamitos 3-1 in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.
Watson highlighted his tenure by guiding the Diablos to the CIF-SS Division 2 championship in 2022. Mission Viejo edged Millikan 2-1 for its third section crown and first since 2016.
Watson was selected O.C. coach of the year after the season while Iowa-bound Sofia Elliott, then a sophomore, earned county player of the year
Watson also led the Diablos to South Coast League titles in 2021 and 2022.
“Hats off to Mission,” he said, “they were great to me.”
