Santa Margarita is going to the CIF Southern California Regional baseball playoffs.
The Eagles were invited because Corona and Harvard-Westlake opted not to compete in the playoffs that begin May 28.
Corona defeated Harvard-Westlake in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game Saturday. Both teams announced their intention to not participate in the regional.
The CIF State organizes and manages the CIF SoCal Regional, and it offers 20 invitations to CIF-SS teams. The spots are awarded to the four semifinalists in Division 1 and Division 2 and the two finalists in each of the other six divisions. Teams can opt to skip the regional playoffs, and if that happens other high finishers in that division’s playoffs are offered the opportunity.
The CIF SoCal Regional playoff brackets will be released Sunday.
Santa Margarita lost in the Division 1 quarterfinals to Huntington Beach on May 10.
With the SoCal Regional starting May 28, it will be 18 days between the Eagles’ loss to Huntington Beach and its regional first-round game.
Huntington Beach and Orange Lutheran, which lost in the Division 1 semifinals, will also play in the regional, along with Division 7 champion Oxford Academy and Division 8 runner-up Pacifica Christian.
Division 3 champion Beckman declined the opportunity to play in the regional.
JSerra won the CIF-SS Division 1 championship last season and declined to play in the SoCal Regional.
