A closer look at the top vote getter in Dan Albano’s poll for best performers in the second week of the softball playoffs:
Name: Katelynn Mathews
High school: Fullerton
Position: Pitcher
Year: Freshman
Noteworthy: Mathews continued her stellar rookie campaign by not allowing an earned run in 12 innings last week in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.
The right-handed pitcher allowed two hits and struck out seven in six shutout innings in the Indians’ 6-1 win against Pacific Coast League champion Woodbridge in the second round. In the quarterfinals against against top-seeded West Torrance, she surrendered one hit and three unearned runs in six strong innings in a 3-0 loss. She tallied four strikeouts.
Her performances were especially important with the late-season knee injury to sophomore pitcher Malaya Majam-Finch.
Mathews leads the Freeway League champion in wins (10), ERA (0.99), strikeouts (122) and innings pitched (84 2/3).
