<p><em>Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. <a href=”https://checkout.ocregister.com/subscriptionpanel”>Subscribe now</a></em></p><hr /><p>Mater Dei’s credentials entering the softball playoffs seem to describe a mystery team.</p><p>The Monarchs’ record was .500 with some inconsistent nonleague results. They played in a strong league but were an at-large selection for the postseason and unranked in the Top 10 for their division.</p><p>But after two rounds of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs, Mater Dei is no longer a secret.</p><p>The Monarchs knocked off top-seeded El Modena 4-2 on Tuesday at Fountain Valley Sports Park to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against Beaumont. Mater Dei (13-11) will be the host team.</p><p>Junior Kayleigh Sutton and senior Mariah Peters each had two hits to lead the Monarchs’ offense while junior pitcher Sienna Acosta earned the victory with four strong innings. Sophomore Citlaly Valencia tossed three scoreless innings to close out the win.</p><p>Mater Dei opened the playoffs last week with a 5-4 triumph against Moore League champion Millikan in the first round. The win helped the Trinity League team <a href=”https://www.ocregister.com/2024/05/06/orange-county-softball-top-25-jserra-fullerton-return-to-top-10-after-playoff-victories-may-6/”>climb to No. 12 in Orange County.</a></p><p>Kaitlyn Galasso had two hits and Jocelyn Alatorre drove in two runs to lead the Vanguards (20-9), who tied for second in the Crestview League.</p><p><strong>In other Division 2 game:</strong></p><p><strong>Whittier Christian 7, Cypress 4: </strong>The visiting Heralds scored four runs in the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie and advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against California. The Heralds (22-7) will be the home team.</p><p>Freshman Rylee Cull, sophomore Sofia Hernandez and senior Ava Schulz each had two hits for Whittier Christian while junior Bobbie Lozano pitched a compete game for her second victory of the playoffs.</p><p>Breana Townsend hit a home run and drove in two runs for the Centurions (20-10).</p><p><strong>Gahr 4, Tesoro 3:</strong> Freshman Isabella Gonzalez pitched a complete game to lead the host Gladiators past the South Coast League champion. Gahr led 4-1 after three innings and advanced to the quarterfinals at Rio Mesa.</p><p><strong>In Division 3:</strong></p><p><strong>Fullerton 6, Woodbridge 1:</strong> Freshman Katelynn Mathews allowed two hits in six shutout innings and catcher Maiah Rodriguez drove in two runs to lead the host Indians into the quarterfinals. Fullerton (23-7) will play at top-seeded West Torrance on Thursday. Malaya Majam-Finch (knee) returned to the circle Tuesday and pitched one inning.</p><p><strong>In Division 7:</strong></p><p><strong>Oxford Academy 17, Hawthorne Math & Science Academy 1:</strong> Ella Pace went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and freshman Emily Ganguly struck out 10 in five innings to lead the top-seeded and host Patriots (23-5). Oxford Academy will play host to A.B. Miller in the quarterfinals Thursday. A.B. Miller edged Los Amigos 4-3 in a second round game.</p><p><em>More results to come.</em></p><p>
