Orange County baseball Top 25: Huntington Beach moves up after CIF-SS playoff win, May 6

This week’s Orange County high school baseball rankings.

Notable this week: Trinity League champion Orange Lutheran remains at No. 1 in the Orange County rankings after shutting out Sierra Canyon in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. … No. 2 Santa Margarita used a strong combination of pitching and hitting to win its Division 1 first-round game. … Huntington Beach had one of its better offensive days of the season in its Division 1 win, and moves into the No. 3 slot. … Foothill returns to the Top 10. … Beckman and Yorba Linda return to the Top 25 after first-round playoff wins.

ORANGE COUNTY BASEBALL TOP 25

1. Orange Lutheran 23-6: Sophomore right-hander Gary Morse pitched a one-hitter for the Lancers in their 6-0 win over Sierra Canyon in the Division 1 playoffs. Orange Lutheran plays at Vista Murrieta (20-8) in the second round Tuesday.

2. Santa Margarita 20-8-1: Cade Townsend continued his spectacular season, striking out 11 as the Eagles beat Tesoro 7-0 in a Division 1 first round game. They are at home against Gahr (18-10) on Tuesday.

3. Huntington Beach 21-8: Matt Hansen homered and drove in five runs for the Oilers in their 11-2 win over Santiago of Corona in a Division 1 first-round game. The Oilers on Tuesday play at Villa Park, the team that beat them in the second round last year.

4. JSerra 15-13-1: The Lions’ quest for a third straight CIF-SS Division 1 championship ended with a 15-2 loss at Bonita.

5. Los Alamitos 22-7: Jack Lorenz pitched a complete game and Davis D’Errico hit a double and a triple and drove in two runs for the Griffins in their 5-0 win at Walnut in the Division 3 first round. They play at La Salle on Tuesday in the second round.

6. Cypress 19-9-1: Nick Montgomery hit a two-run home run and Wyatt Rosales pitched a complete game in the Centurions’ 5-2 win over Calabasas in the Division 1 first round. Cypress takes a seven-game winning streak into a second-round game Tuesday at San Dimas.

7. Mater Dei 17-12: Wylan Moss pitched a shutout, Brody Connors drove in three runs for the Monarchs in a 5-0 Division 1 first-round win over Damien. Mater Dei will play at home against top-seeded Corona (26-3) in the second round Tuesday. The Monarchs beat Corona 5-3 in the Boras Classic South tournament championship game last month.

8. Servite 15-13: The Friars did not qualify for the playoffs.

9. Aliso Niguel 18-8: The Wolverines lost to Valencia of Valencia 7-1 in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

10. Foothill 21-8: The Knights beat South Hills 7-5 in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs as Brian Harbour and Tyler Hawkins drove in two runs each. Foothill is home against La Mirada in the second round Tuesday.
