Four Orange County teams reach CIF-SS girls beach volleyball semifinals

Four Orange County teams — Capistrano Valley Christian, Crean Lutheran, Huntington Beach and JSerra — have advanced to the CIF Southern Section girls beach volleyball semifinals.

The Division 1 and Division 2 semifinals and finals will be played Saturday at Long Beach City College.

Crean Lutheran is 19-0 this season and was the CIF-SS Division 2 champion last season. The Saints will play Capistrano Valley Christian (16-2) in a Division 2 semifinal at 10:15 a.m. Crean beat Capistrano Valley Christian in last season’s Division 2 final.

Capistrano Valley Christian and Crean Lutheran played each other earlier this season, and Crean Lutheran won 4-1.

The Crean Lutheran-Capistrano Valley Christian winner plays the winner of Saturday’s 9 a.m. semifinal, Long Beach Wilson (15-3) vs. Oaks Christian (15-4), in the championship match at 2 p.m.

The Division 1 semifinals are JSerra (14-1) vs. Redondo (14-2) at 11:30 a.m. and Huntington Beach (13-0) vs. Mira Costa (15-0) at 12:45 p.m.

The semifinals winners play each other in the Division 1 final at 3:30 p.m.

Mira Costa beat Redondo in the Division 1 final last season, which was the first season for CIF-SS championships in girls beach volleyball.

Plenty of indoor players also play beach volleyball. Huntington Beach’s No. 1 duo of seniors Haylee LaFontaine and Dani Sparks were All-Orange County first team this past fall for indoors volleyball. Both are going on to play beach volleyball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Huntington Beach girls beach volleyball coach Aly Torline said one must be an all-around player to succeed in the beach game.

“There’s a little more self-coaching, a little more independence,” said Torline, a Huntington Beach High alum who was an All-America player at Cal State San Bernardino. “You can’t hide when there’s just the two of you. You’ve got to be able to do it all, because if you can’t the other team will find that out.”

Admission to the semifinals and finals is $12 for adults and $5 for students with valid student identification and for children ages 5-13. Tickets are available at GoFan.co. Parking is $2 at the Veterans Stadium lot.

The NFHS Network will live stream the semifinals and finals.

The CIF-SS girls beach volleyball pairs playoffs begin Tuesday and conclude Wednesday at the Newland Courts at Huntington State Beach.
