A modern Prairie-style home in Huntington Beach’s Lake Park neighborhood is on the market for $7.695 million.
The 5,500-square-foot house has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. It sits on a nearly quarter-acre lot with two pools.
Records show the house sold for $2.8 million in June 2017. Back then, it spanned .16 acres and had half as many bedrooms and bathrooms as it has today.
The current owner expanded the home’s living space and outdoor amenities to a neighboring lot.
There’s now a second pool with seating, a water wall with LED lighting and artificial turf inlaid with pavers. Perfecting the intricate design took three attempts.
The expansion also includes a two-story addition that connects to the original house through the old laundry room. Upstairs are the three additional bedrooms. There’s a two-car garage, a family room with a wet bar, and an outdoor California room with heaters, a TV, and a custom linear fireplace that opens to an outdoor kitchen.
According to listing agent Garrett Weston of Coldwell Banker Realty, the owner wanted the house to have a consistent look and feel as if it were built all at once, so he hired the same architect who designed the house originally in the early 2000s.
The prior owner Louis Dennis commissioned architect Jeffrey A. Dahl to draw up plans for a modified Prairie style with mid-century modern features. In 2010, it received a Building Industry of Southern California SoCal Award in the custom home category for Dahl and builder Bruce Roeland.
A hydronic radiant heating under poured terrazzo flooring from inside the shower to the area around the fireplace in the showroom garage. One of its most unique features is the fireplace insert, which resembles a car engine instead of faux logs.
Folding doors open the garage to a courtyard and a smaller pool with seating and spa jets.
The kitchen is sleek and modern, with high-gloss green Poliform upper cabinets, Caesarstone countertops, Gaggenau appliances, vintage 1960s Koch & Lowy pendants and a 900-bottle wine cellar.
Glass surrounds the formal dining room, offering views of the pool and California room. Precision-cut drywall eliminates the need for moldings, including around the dark green frames of the windows and interior doors.
Dennis worked closely with the builder and interior designer. He even brought in an 8th-generation feng shui master to create good feng shui by making changes to the plans.
“Jeff wanted people to see the pool as soon as they opened the front door,” said Dennis, who joined Weston on a conference call to discuss the property.
But the feng shui master rejected that vision.
Walls now stand where there would have been glass, and visitors “slowly discover the house” on entering,” Dennis said. “You don’t want to give it to them all at once.”
As Weston described it, the house is a piece of art.
“There aren’t too many things that overly wow me, but with this, you can feel how much went into this property,” he said.
