Storm system brings thunder, rain and hail to Southern California

Residents in some parts of Southern California were surprised by rain and hail Friday afternoon as a strong storm system moved across the region.

A storm system brought showers and thunderstorms across parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties on Friday, with brief heavy downpours, gusty winds, lightning and even hail possible.

Thursday’s Santa Ana winds generated a low-pressure system located near the California-Arizona border, National Weather Forecaster David Gomberg said, making way for Friday’s wet afternoon.

Heavy rain formed over the Santa Ana mountains and Palomar mountain at around 3 p.m. on Friday, with hail and heavy rain reported in South Orange County.

The effects of this system could be felt in the Inland Empire as well, but the bulk of the precipitation is expected to be felt in Los Angeles and Orange County.
