Search called off for kayaker possibly missing off Southern California coast

A search was called off overnight for a possible missing kayaker reported off Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard Sunday.

A suspicious kayak was reported near the breakwater just before 10 p.m., prompting the response from U.S. Coast Guard and Ventura County Fire Department crews.

After finding the unmanned kayak full of fishing gear crews searched the area by boat, helicopter and on foot, freelance media firm TNLA reported.

The search ended shortly after midnight with no sign of the kayaker, a VCFD spokesperson told KTLA.

It was unclear if the search would resume Monday.
