While promoting her new movie “Marty Supreme” where she performs opposite Timothée Chalamet, Gwenyth Paltrow, a prominent figure in 2017’s #MeToo movement, said she was unaware of the rise of intimacy coordinators on film sets, the Los Angeles Times reported.
An intimacy coordinator, according to SAG/AFTRA, the labor union that represents many actors and media professionals, is a liaison between actors and production, and a movement coach and/or choreographer where nudity, simulated sex and other intimate and hyper-exposed scenes are concerned.
In the upcoming film, directed by Josh Safdie, loosely based on the life of Martin “Marty” Reisman, a table tennis champion portrayed by Chalamet, the 52-year-old Paltrow said their characters’ entanglement involved a lot of sex scenes.
“I was like, ‘Okay, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14,” The Times reports Paltrow said of her 29-year-old costar.
During the filming of at least one of the sex scenes, an intimacy coordinator reportedly asked Paltrow if she was comfortable with a particular interaction.
“I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on,’” she recalled saying.
The actor said that she and Chalamet told them they were fine, and that the coordinator could step back a bit.
“I don’t know how it is for kids starting out, but … if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’ I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that,” The Times reports Paltrow saying.
With this role, Chalamet joins Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and other leading men acting opposite Paltrow, whose role in the 1999 film “Shakespeare in Love” earned her an Oscar for Best Actress.
“Marty Supreme” is scheduled for a Christmas Day release in theaters.
