(KRON) — California now has more electric vehicle (EV) chargers than gasoline nozzles, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom. In what Newsom’s office is calling a “significant milestone,” the governor announced that the number of EV chargers in the Golden State is 48% more than the number of gasoline nozzles.
Statewide, there are 178,549 public and shared EV chargers in California. By comparison, the California Energy Commission (CEC) estimates there are about 120,000 gas nozzles across the state.
“As the federal government works to make it harder for you to charge your electric car, California is doing the opposite,” said Newsom. “We know have nearly 50% more chargers than gas nozzles in the state, meaning you have more options than ever to charge your vehicle.”
More than 162,000 of the total EV chargers installed in California are Level 2 chargers, while nearly 17,000 are fast chargers, Newsom’s office said. The CEC also estimates that more than 700,000 Level 2 chargers are installed at single-family homes.
“The California EV driver experience is getting better by the day,” said CEC Chair David Hochschild. “The state continues to invest in EV infrastructure, with particular emphasis in hard-to-reach areas, making these vehicles an easy choice for new car buyers.”
News of the number of EV chargers outpacing the number of gas nozzles comes amid a backlash against the top EV seller in California. There has been a dramatic increase in acts of vandalism on Teslas and protests at Tesla dealerships, largely stemming from the political stances of the EV company’s owner, Elon Musk.
Local officials like San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan have condemned the acts of vandalism on Teslas, while United States Attorney General Pam Bondi has likened them to acts of “domestic terrorism.”
