A 19-year-old suspected of killing a man in Garden Grove with a fatal shot to the head was arrested as he attempted to cross the border into Mexico, police said Wednesday, March 5.
The shooting occurred Feb. 21 in a parking lot near 9622 Garden Grove Boulevard, east of Gilbert Street, shortly after 11 p.m. Officers found 26-year-old Trieu Huynh from Garden Grove suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. He was hospitalized and died from his injuries a few days later, the Garden Grove Police Department said in a statement.
Additional details on the circumstances and motive behind the shooting were not released.
Detectives detained the suspect, Chan Tham Giang, in San Ysidro on Feb. 26 as he tried to walk across the border. He was later booked on suspicion of murder after authorities executed a search warrant at his residence in Garden Grove. The relationship between Giang and Huynh was not disclosed.
