Autodesk to cut 9 percent of workforce in latest Bay Area tech layoffs

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — In the latest of an ongoing series of tech layoffs, San Francisco-based Autodesk announced Thursday it would be cutting its workforce by approximately 9 percent. The job cuts, which are part of what the company is calling a “worldwide restructuring plan,” will result in about 1,350 people losing their jobs.

Autodesk is a software-as-a-service company that produces the AutoCAD platform, which is used by architects, engineers, and structural designers to design buildings. The company maintains its headquarters in San Francisco and has several other offices across North America.

As part of the restructuring plan announced Thursday, Autodesk also said it would be closing facilities.

The layoffs were announced despite the company reporting double-digit growth in the fourth quarter. As has been the case with recent layoffs by Salesforce and Workday, the job cuts are a cost-cutting measure as the company reallocates resources towards AI.

“Autodesk is focused on the convergence of design and make in the cloud, enable by platform, industry clouds, and AI,” said Autodesk President and CEO, Andrew Anagnost. “We are reallocating internal resources toward these critical areas and beginning the optimization of our go-to-market functions to better meet the evolving needs of our customers and channel partners.”

The company said it anticipates pre-tax restructuring charges of approximately $135 million to $150 million as a result of the staff reduction.
