Historic SF concert venue completes multi-million-dollar renovation

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — If you’ve lived in the San Francisco Bay Area long enough, chances are you have been to a show at the Regency Ballroom. If you’ve attended a concert there recently, you may have noticed some changes.

The century-old Regency Ballroom recently completed a multi-million-dollar renovation, venue operator and concert promoter Goldenvoice announced in a press release. The historic San Francisco concert venue located at Sutter and Van Ness went through several upgrades, which include the sound system, repainting of the interior and remodeled bathrooms.

The interior was repainted Salamander Green to “give it a fresh look while carefully preserving the building’s unique architectural details and historic features,” the release states. Bathroom sinks are now painted gold, and the Marble Room VIP Lounge has also been upgraded.

Renovations at the venue were officially completed at the beginning of 2025 after about one year of gradual construction, according to Goldenvoice. The venue still hosted events throughout the one year of construction. However, Regency Ballroom did completely close in July of 2024 before reopening with a Shakes Graves concert on Aug. 13.

Goldenvoice said the meetings with architects and contractors began in November 2023, but the renovation project had been in talks for years.

“Renovating the Regency Ballroom has been a long-standing goal for us, and the time is now
right to make it a reality,” Senior Vice President of Goldenvoice Danny Bell said in a statement., “It’s important for us to preserve the rich history of the building while making improvements to the audience and artist experience. We believe in San Francisco and are excited to give it a beautiful, revitalized music venue.”

BAYNK was the last headline act at the venue, performing a set Saturday night. Regency Ballroom’s next concert is SahBabii on Saturday, March 1.

The 1,400-capacity Regency Ballroom has hosted more than 1,000 concerts since its inception in 1909. It is known to be the stage for many artists before they “make it big.” According to Goldenvoice, those artists include Sabrina Carpenter, Snoop Dogg, SZA, Wu-Tang Clan, Rosalía and Skrillex.

Goldenvoice operates other local venues such as The Warfield, Frost Amphitheater and The Roxy Theatre. The company also operates the world-renowned Coachella music festival.
