Debris from January’s Palisades Fire has been washing up on beaches in Santa Monica following the recent rain storms, according to city officials.
“Santa Monica city crews are working to clear large pieces of debris, install sand berms around storm drains to prepare for debris clearance, and clean the sand along local shorelines,” Santa Monica Harbor Patrol officials said in a video posted on Instagram on Wednesday.
The sediment consists mostly of fine ash mixed with sand that washed into and out of the ocean, the post citing Los Angeles County Public Health stated.
“Initial tests showed the material was NOT hazardous, officials said. “County experts are regularly testing ocean water and sediment and will issue health advisories and closures if needed.”
Beachgoers in Santa Monica were urged to avoid large pieces of debris, watch their step and report any concerns to the nearest lifeguard tower.
